as 2017 draws to a close I wanted to take a retrospective look back at this past year to see what were the best laptop offerings of 2017 hey everybody this is Andrew and welcome to my first installment of the best of 2017 first up is the mid 2017 MacBook Pro 13 inch Edition without touch bar and without touch ID I decided to pick the one without the touch bar because I hate the touch bar to be honest with you I've been using it on my plate 2016 MacBook Pro 15 inch and I absolutely hate it I think it's gimmicky doesn't provide any value and it doesn't replace the physical buttons so that's why I chose the 13 inch without touch bar and without touch ID now a touch ID I do like but I'm willing to sacrifice it as long as I get those physical buttons instead of that god-awful touch bar for the 13-inch models the prices range from $12.99 all the way to $17.99 now the unit I have is $12.99 that's the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro it's without the touch bar without the touch ID I got a refurbished from Apple for only 1099 and to me that's a steal I've had very good luck from apple with reconditioned or refurbished products now one of the biggest selling points here is its display it's got a Retina display that's apples known for its a 13.3 inch IPS display with a resolution of 2560 by 1600 we'll talk more about that in just a little bit and it's powered by the Intel Core i5 cable eight processor it's got eight or sixteen gigabytes of RAM depending on the model you choose and it's ddr3 the unit I have only has 128 gigabyte SSD so I would recommend for the average consumer to get something with a minimum of 256 preferably 512 but then you're going to bump up in price for me personally I don't need that extra storage I use Samsung t3 external SSDs they work fine I can bounce around between different computers from my iMac to my MacBook Pros no problems with using that especially when I'm doing Final Cut Pro working on different projects but for the average consumer go with the higher capacity and without a doubt the star of the show is its display as I said earlier it's a 13.3 inch IPS Retina display resolution 2560 by 1600 that's 227 pixels per inch and it has a 16 by 10 aspect ratio now it does get very bright at 458 nits so it is good for both indoor and outdoor use and it covers the color gamut really well at 123 percent srgb and 78 percent Adobe RGB that's pretty good I absolutely love the display I think it's one of the best in the business it's bright sharp it's really crisp and it really is excellent and of course I would be remiss if I didn't mention it's phenomenal build quality and of course Apple is known for their excellent build in their products and this is no exception the one area of controversy surrounds the keyboard now I actually like it but there are a lot of people that ate it and I understand why it doesn't have great key travel it's a very different kind of keyboard is very clackety sound kind of keyboard if there is such a term or is such a word to describe how it sounds that how it feels but I actually like it and a lot of other people like it as well but I could understand where some people will not like it it would be turned off by it and there for they should go with the 2015 MacBook Pros that had that traditional keyboard that they did away with now I'm not gonna say which one is better I'm just gonna tell you what I like and I think this butterfly mechanism keyboard on this car and MacBook Pro is really good I haven't go like it and you have the multi level backlighting it works really well really lit up very evenly I really do like it and it has the oversized touchpad in fact you can fit an iPhone 10 just about in that space now it's very responsive to finger scrolling is a pleasure on it and you can do gestures I'm a big fan of this touchpad even if it in its oversized capacity in the other era of controversies lack of ports now on the non touch bar version you get two USB type-c ports they're both on the ball three that's all you'll get you also get a 3.5 millimeter headset jack but you will not get the other two USB type-c ports that's reserved for the touch bar model there's no SD card slot there's no USB type a ports there's no HDMI out you'll have to stick with us two USB key Thunderball three ports if you want those other ports you'll have to use dongles so this is the front facing webcam on the macbook pro 13 mid-2017 it's a HD webcam and it's actually not bad it's certainly much better than the 12 inch macbook which has a VGA webcam which is pathetic you know my thoughts on that if you've seen my other videos and my review of that 12 inch macbook but this is okay if you wanted to skype if you want to do video conferencing this certainly will work it's good for FaceTime video obviously it certainly is good I think it's actually pretty good so let me know what you think of this webcam in the comment section below the speakers are excellent it's full sound it's got good volume it's got nice bass it's really is a very nice sounding speakers let's hear them in action [Applause] [Applause] as far as the SSD is concerned the reads were very good at 20 185 and I would actually say those are excellent scores and the write was okay at 680 4.1 not outstanding but certainly well above average and here's how it did on the geek bench for testing 92 87 the multi-core score and the single core score of 44 78 those are pretty good scores and the OpenCL did 28,000 754 that's the Intel iris + 650 graphics and speaking of the graphics this does not have a dedicated GPU as you would find on the 15-inch version having said that here's how it did in terms of gaming you can do some gaming on this I would say mid level is certainly possible depending on your settings but if you're buying this strictly as a gaming machine for triple-a titles look at the 15 inch version or look at a Windows equivalent with some high-end graphics card not this because this is not made for that and under heavy load it will get warm here's a diagram showing the thermals especially above the keyboard you'll see to get a little bit warmer than other parts of the device and if you flip over the device you'll see all the top portion of the bottom of the device will also get quite a warm the mid-2017 13-inch MacBook Pro without the touch bar has a fifty four point five watt hour battery and it has a really good battery as far as battery life is concerned it did 11 hours and 21 minutes on the Wi-Fi surfing test if you've got a stream a movie 1080p h.264 11 hours and 23 minutes and under heavy maximum load we're talking about full brightness we're looking at an hour and 18 minutes very good battery life overall for normal use everyday kind of tasks now to put the battery life into perspective it did better than the last year's model the 13-inch without the touch bar 7% to be exact better than the XPS 13 the qhd+ version core i7 21 percent better than that and of course the Apple MacBook Pro the touch par version for this year the mid-2017 it did 24% better than that so the touch bar not only is not adding anything it's certainly taking away from the battery life that's one of the big reasons I chose the 13 inch version – touch bar so to bring it all home can I recommend the mid 2017 MacBook Pro 13-inch without touch bar without touch ID and the answer is yes I can recommend it it's got an excellent display outstanding battery life outstanding speakers great build superb build in fact really good construction in terms of build quality you can't fault Apple on that front never could because they are some of the best in the business when it comes to that but of course this laptop is not without as controversies first one being its port selection or lack thereof you get those two USB type-c thumbs of all three ports that's it you do what we also get the three point five millimeter headset jack thank God we have that but if you want to connect any other type of ports such as an SD card you want to connect the HDMI you want to connect all the other things then you're gonna have these dongles get used to adapters that's just the way it is but I am happy to see that Thunderbolt 3 the other controversy obviously is the keyboard it's not for everybody the butterfly mechanism is not liked by everybody I actually like it there are camps that do like it but again I understand why people would shy away from it but with those few negatives aside I have to say this checks all the boxes you'd want in a laptop in late 2017 earning it one of the best of 2017 and 95 percent making this worth your money so what do you think about the 2017 MacBook 13-inch without touch far about touch ID I like it one of my favorite laptops 13-inch category in 2017 making it one of the best of 2017 I'm sorry I didn't review this in it sooner is really a good laptop really solid construction some of the best in the business a gorgeous Retina display it's really bright good for both indoor and outdoor use I really love the speakers on this thing some of the best in the business apples producing some great devices when it comes to audio and really battery life has been excellent 11 plus hours I'm not what I call normal use you can't go wrong now of course it's not without its controversies the keyboard being one of them not everybody loves the butterfly keyboard the butterfly mechanism it's a loud keyboard and some people are turned off by that I understand that but I really like this laptop it really check all the boxes when you look at all the individual components now yes it's running the kv lake processor it's not the 8th gen processor but that's okay you're getting good performance out of this so if you're looking for a gaming machine obviously this is not it it's it's not a quad-core CPU it's a dual-core CPU if you want the 15-inch version you can get the quad-core CPU and get a dedicated GPU this doesn't have a dedicated GPU but performance has been good but I'm curious to know what you think leave a comment in the comment section below I know there's a lot of Mac haters out there I'm sure I'm gonna get a lot of comments in the comment section below why am i picking this as one of the best of 2017 the fact of the matter is looking at this objectively it really checks all the boxes now is it expensive yes I think it is overpriced and as ice' mentioned you can get an equivalent Windows laptop for less money maybe 20-30 percent at least less than what you'd pay for this MacBook Pro but if you're a Mac user like I am and you do like video editing you do all sorts of things a Final Cut Pro you do some photoshop on this you can also do Premiere Pro but you could do all those things on this pretty well now again if you want the higher end video editing if you want triple-a gaming look at the 15 inch version that has the dedicated GPU and also is a quad-core processor this is not but this is great it's 3 pounds you can take it on the go really can't go wrong but I'm curious to know what you think leave a comment in that comment section below so please hit the like button please subscribe please share this video don't forget to leave a comment in that comment section below let me know how I'm doing let me know if there's a device or something out there you think I should review I'll do my best to try to make that happen don't forget to check us out on Facebook on Twitter Instagram and of course our website AMD Tech so until next time this is andrew from AMD tech see you

The MacBook Pro 13 (Mid-2017) is really an excellent laptop. Great screen, battery life, sound, and build. Lack of variety of ports, and controversial keyboard are potential negatives. I actually like the keyboard. Let me know what you think.

I’m not getting 11 hours, if lucky would get 8 hours, it might be due using a lot of safari tabs though but again that’s what is a normal usage for me

hi andrew I just bought this non tough bar mbp 13" with 16g ram and 256g ssd (though it has not arrived yet). very curious to know if it works well in fcpx and motion, I generally use proxies with 1080 footage (sometimes 4k) during the editing process and i don't multitask, and thanks for this extremely informative video!

Can I play Civilization 6 on it? I had a a mid 2012 MacBook Ian’s I was able to play Civilization 5 on it, so I’m sure I can I just want to make sure I can

I was wondering if you can possibly do a comparison video between this model and the new Mac Book Air! That would be dope.

Hi Andrew! Great review ! Could you please make a review video on the new 13 MacBook Air 2018 in comparison to the 13 MacBook Pro 2017.

Got it for 1120, after student discount from bestbuy. Loving it so far, smooth, good battery life and travel friendly! Really happy with it. My last laptop was HP, which didn’t last me 2 years. Hoping my MacBook lasts me some good number of years. 👋🏼

Thanks for the video. At least I know now why my touchbar 13 inch model kills the battery. I should get non touchbar version instead.

I need a new macbook, I will just use it for watching movies and web browsing. I will go for this one instead of 2018 one since it’s cheaper.

Great Review! You didn’t take yourself all seriously like the other jackass Youtubers! Any way, I picked up the 128 gb mine is mostly for media consumption, some games, and few Docs..I love it!

I purchased the 2017 Macbook Pro w/o touchbar, 16GB Ram, and 256GB SSD last week. I would've also gotten the i7 but it does not make a difference to me personally; $300 for an a pinch more speed isn't cool (would've purchased if $100 more). I've been multitasking on the go and have no complaints. Excel, powerpoint, youtube, and safari open and no lags AT ALL compared to the XPS 15 maxed that I returned due to windows taking too long to open an application or the WIFI connectivity giving me issues. I saved $400 on the macbook and feel more comfy with my investment for my on the go laptop for work use. The touchbar is not worth it; do you actually use the Slo-Mo on your iPhone everyday? Gimmick.
