I’m a returning Destiny 1 veteran, player since beta then stopped when Leviathan came out in D2. I forgot my account info, so I made a new one and now I’m being treated like a clueless dummy by my ghost and I’m low key offended

Hello, i'm new at Destiny 2. What does the "Solar, Arc and Void" energy means on gear like helmet, chest, gloves and so. Does it support me in my subclass or is it defense against weapons with solar etc.?
I didn't get any exotics for finishing the red war campaign. I think bungie removed it

Is it possible to make a powerfull all around character? The solar and kinetic energy type thingies will only do extra damage to certain enemies or is it really hard to kill some enemies with only one damage type?
